Montana | Guess that I need to say that most years leaching is not a problem. This spring we had a 7" rain event that did leach N down to where the young plants were hurt. I try to do most no-till although I have knifed in urea in the fall on my irrigated ground. In Montana dryland conditions yield therefore N requirements are determend by both stored soil moisture and rain fall. The later you can make that decition the better. But rain fall to move N in can be missing for a month after surface application can lead to losses and/or the N not being available when needed by the young plants. So applications at seeding are the best. This spring I did modify my SDX drill to side band urea, but with all double shoot operations I did compromise my seed placement. 30 to 100 units of N as urea with the seed just is not a option so I am looking to use ESN to control the seed injury while doing the best seed placement. | |
