When grid sampling was still mostly a fad the JPA did a large series of grid sampling and looked at the results.
It turns out the 2.5 acre grid is a good compromise. They found that a 72 ft X 72 ft grid is the most responsive, without being prohibitively costly in time, labor, & assets.
On my ground I like to pull at least three soil samples, and / or tissue samples and then average them if there are no large differences.
I usually sample East Central and West in a long field. In a more square field E, W, N, & S quadrant works here.
Personally I feel the most important factor is a reasonable good set of records or knowledge of each field. Then when there is a wild set of soil test results you do not jump in haste. I use sampling to confirm what I already know or at least suspect. | |
