NW Washington | Some folks mount a "rod-weeder" on the rear shanks of a chisel plow in wheat growing places like Montana and western Canada. The rod, about an inch in diameter, runs just under the soil surface is used to up root weeds and push residue back up on the surface. Some of these attachments power the rod with a hydraulic motor so that it turns in the opposite direction of travel, others use a hex shaft mounted in bearings which will actually turn on its own. These chisels usually have big sweeps on the shanks. But the rod does level out the soil surface. But I don't think this rod weeder attachment would work well in long residue like corn stalks or tough bean stalks/vines. | |
