Subject: RE: Anyone used a Dumpit? Our neighbor...

Chebanse, IL.....

We don't have one personally, but a neighbor put a Lowry model (per your example) in this fall for new drying setup. He put in the 500 bu model. One concern does depend on your area & site....water. Probably not so much water INside the pit, but surrounding the pit. In his case, the 500 bu model resides in a hole 16' in the ground. Buoancy is a problem for some if you have too much water surrounding the pit. Neighbor had surrounded the pit w/plastic tile & then had a large sump pump down in the ground to keep water out of surrounding tile. Sump pump emptied into drain tile for his yard area. However, if you have more water problems, like the pit might be sitting in an area that "floods", you have to consider that you canNOT keep the sump pumped out. Most likely it will not have anywhere to pump. So, if heavy rains are predicted, you may need to park something heavy on TOP of the pit, like a 4wd tractor or something. Basically, the pit will try & pop out of the ground if it stays wet for very long.

We visited neighbor just after a large rain. He said that actually his pit area was fairly high & dry. Sump pump (with power outage backup alarms!) was running intermittently, but there was NO water inside the pit. Another possible solution is to fill the inside of the pit w/water if you know it's going to flood. But, you'll have to remember to pump it all back out someday soon. I'm not sure of the bottom end of the auger is bearing suspended, or not.

Anyway, pit looks very nice. Very well constructed. Comes with a cover.
