NW Washington | It sounds like the potentiometer that controls the volume has is dirty with a film of dirt, dust, grease or whatever and the wiper is not making good contact anymore. Get an aerosol can of contact cleaner from Radio Shack or wherever and spray the volume knob and try to get in around the shaft. Taking the knob off would be a better idea. Wipe off the excess and if the gods are smiling you are good to go. I have done this trick to my 95 Dakota once and on a good many other simple electrical things that quit working for no reason, like a battery powered clock.
