Subject: Haylage Pictures from May 2008

Callao Missouri
Gerard's post's as of late with the silage work going on reminded me I needed to load the pictures from our silage work this spring onto the computer for my father. He has been asked to speak at a livestock school this winter so I will have to give him a crash course in power point after harvest. :)

Our equipment is not nearly as big and fancy as some but it fills our pit every year. We are set up very good there is 120 acres of forage meadow in an oval shaped circle around the silo so we just drive up to the pit to dump every time. I am afraid a truck while it would save some time would cut ruts, and get stuck. Plus we would need more EXPERIENCED help if we were to add another step in the process. The silo holds between 80- 120 loads and I think we got rained out on 100 or so this year.

One little thing we have done the last three years is we put wet corn gluten in along with the haylage as we pack it in layers. The feed is cheaper in the spring and summer because the demand is not as good for the product. The silage bunker keeps the feed in perfect condition, and there no worry's about winter time supply and weather. This year we only got 2 dump trailer loads in, in years past we have gotten 3 loads in.

All this Haylage will be mixed in a vertical mixer, 1 1500# bale of dry hay with 3-4000# silage and corn gluten out of the silo. We feed this ration to cattle in dry lot's and our spring calving cows. A big thanks to my sister for taking the photo's, our father, Bill is standing by the 1100 Massey Ferguson and our hired man is in the 6400 packing. I hope you enjoy the pictures, if you have any questions dad will be along to answer them tomorrow.
