Subject: RE: A question for Phil N on wheat seeding rates

If your in a area with sufficient rainfall to support 600 heads/yd2, 200 emerged plants, each with 3 tillers will get you 600 heads. As the planting date is delayed you will need to push up your seeding rates by around 10% every 7-10 days (cumulative) so if you delay seeding by 3 weeks you would need to establish 300 plants, each with 2 tillers to achieve the same 600 heads (tillering will decrease with later planting dates).

To establish 200 plants early, you will need to sow +/- 225-250 seeds depending on germination %, soil conditions, vigor, standard of seeding depth consistency etc. At 15,000 seeds per pound, 250 seeds would equal 80 lb/ac. If you figure 350 seeds (for later planting dates) that would increase to 113lb.

If your no-tilling into heavy residue, the seeding rates may need to be raised further.

There are numerous variables to consider. You need to read my new book, it will document many of these.
