Uncles always did this during the winter on the alfalfa. all i no is that they would not put it on to close to spring and would try to spread it thin with multiple applications so there would not be large clumps prohibiting growth in the spring. They consistently had solid 6-7 year solid alfalfa stands with only using manure to replenish soil.
