The accumulator is "tee'd" into the hyd line to the header lift cylinders, it turns the header lift cylinders into big spring shocks which allows more float in the header lift.
The valve on the accumulator is a needle valve that allows pretty exact adjustment of the oil flow in / out of the accumulator, which allows you to make the spring shock either stiff or soft.
I used to cut sunflowers with my PT 1482 combine with the 17.5 header.
Being a pull type combine, I was forced to cut round and round the field at up to 7- 8 mph with the small header.
While cutting across the headlands of the field at that speed, the combine was doing a kangaroo hop as it bounced over the row ridges. By careful adjustment of the accumulator needle valve, I could make the tips of the SF pans run dead even though the combine was bouncing a good 6 inches up / down.
It makes it much easier to do a good cutting job and greatly cushions the shock load of a bouncing combine / header.
