Subject: Re: Hey Rich! Question for ya!

We had a gearbox multiplier on a PTO hydraulic pump run itself dry a few weeks ago.  Started screaming and making nasty noises.  Turns out it had a plastic level check plug in it that got the end cracked off somehow and let the fluid out.  Filled it with 80w90 and it seemed fine for well over 100 hours (2 weeks I think) and then it started making cracking/banging noises.  One bearing disintegrated, a pair of splines were 90% chewed, and a shim that held stuff in place against the side of the gearbox chewed up the case.  Made it through harvest except for the last few days but I should've ordered a replacement as soon as I knew it'd started screaming.  Wishful thinking after refilling it with oil cost us 3-4 days worth of harvesting at the end of the season (happened on a weekend of course).  To make a long story longer, if you ran something dry of oil then take it apart to check the damage as soon as you have the time.
