| There was a passing of the baton this past spring for the first time since 1972, when the two brands crossed each other at about 20% market share. This year they passed each other at ~25% market share. Ten years ago when Monsanto purchased Dekalb and shortly before Pioneer sold out to DuPont, the 'flying ear' had <10% and the 'squiggly green trapezoid' was >50% market share. When all of the Monsanto 'owned brands' are added together, the market share easisly tops 40% and is likely to top 50% in the next year or so. The Channel group of companies (Midwest, Crow's, and NC+) will pass Syngenta's group of three brands for third place this coming year like two motorcycles meeting on a paved road. Garst, Golden Harvest, and NK are in a free fall on market share, and the Channel brands have the opposite momentum. It's an interesting business - like all businesses! | |
