Subject: Farming on the cheap cheap

Macon, IL
I went to a closing out sale yesterday, older gentleman retiring. Sometime those are the most interesting sales.

Most of the equipment was 30+ years old and a lot had set out probably most of that time, but it was all functional.

Decent old 6600 Diesel Hydro combine w/15ft platform $2,200
Low tin 643 cornhead $2,500
4320-Looked rough but ran decent-duals were about worn out-$7,500
Oliver 77 Average Cond-hydraulics and PTO-$1,200
Rusty 12 or 13ft Glencoe Soil Saver-$600
7000 planter-Rough but complete-$1,500
Field cultivators, disk, cultivators, etc all went for scrap price-$150-$200 ea
Early 60's ford grain truck-not pretty but it Ran-$500

You could have bought every single piece of equipment (excluding hay stuff) for under $18,000. I still think it is cool someone can farm and live on that little of equipment. Would be a lot of work and frustration but he got by ok. I admire that.

I am not sure if I am glad I never went to a sale like that 15 years ago or happy. If I had known then what I know now I probably would have started farming ealier with that type of equipment.

Not sure how much he farmed-probably only a couple hundred and ran some cattle.
