The BBC ran a report suggesting risks to aircraft were so low as to be statistically insignificant (not sure other countries can view this)

The story points out that birds are very numerous and quite often hit but damage is rare.
Plenty of birds are larger and heavier than small drones too.
Drones are still few in number and only fly briefly mostly at very low altitude.

If you ever take your phantom up to even 1000 feet it takes forever to come down and is far more scary than going out 2 or 3 times that distance near the ground.
In the unlikely event the pilot saw a real drone at that height it was not a widely available consumer product.
