Oily spots at slight leaks are about the only indication of how much oil a system has lost, just a guess really.
I will add a can of refrigerant /2 oz ester oil after 2-3 years of top ups.
If you run it out of oil, you burn up the compressor, if you add more than you need, you cut cooling ability a bit, too much is the lesser evil.

I will also not add a stop leak product, as some are a lot like radiator stop leak and can clog things up,
I DO regularly add seal / hose and O ring conditioner /refrigerant cans, as it seems to often slow /stop small leaks, especially in converted systems with non barrier hose. Unlike the stop leak, seal conditioner does not contain any solid material.
