Subject: JD 2955 running hot

JD 2955 when running is just touching the red on the gage. We are not working it hard, (grinding feed, raking hay etc). The tractor has 9600 hrs on the tach and about 200 hrs on an overhaul.
The water pump has recently been replaced, the radiator has had an acid flush, the thermostats have been replaced, the sending unit has been replaced, new radiator cap. It has the direct drive pulley on the fan, we replaced the "variable" fan when it was only months old.
The engine feels warm when you place your hand by it, but not excessively so. The radiator feels the same.
Can a gage go bad and look like it is working, rather than just working or not ? Is there a test to check if the gage is bad?
Any other ideas ? Could a hose seperate and collaspe and cause a blockage ?
Thinking of borrowing a non touch thermometer and shoot some temps over the engine. Thinking where I find a "colder" spot would be where to start looking for the problem, am I right on this?
We have owned since new. It has always had coolant changed with JD premixed, conditioner added etc.
The tractor does chores, not field work, so it really has never had a long hard load put on it.
