1st question is what year is the 1640, mainly what motor does it have? early 89 and before have a gutless IH motor, late 89 and after have a 5.9 Cummins.
If the 1640 numbers are little and in the black stripe, towards the rear of the combine then it has a Cummins, if the numbers are big and either at the front or back it is an IH.
We had a 750 grey cab and now have a early 1989 1640 with the IH motor. As it is the 750 would do more in a day if it didn't breakdown but that was rarely the case towards the end. If the 1640 was turbo'd and had 40-50 hp more it would run away from a 750.
If you're looking to have the same capacity I think you need to go bigger than a 1640.
If you bale straw it would probably be better to go with another conventional. Here is a couple links to some info on CIH combines.
