How to improve straw chopper for tall soybeans?

Not sure if this applies to newer JD equipment, but many years ago when running MF combines and the hammers in the choppers got worn, we would turn the hammers around to get twice the life from them. If memory serves, one bolt per hammer did the job and balance was not changed. I've also run a bead of weld down the face of each hammer to "square them up" a little. Seems that when the leading edge of the hammers get rounded it affects the "suction" they produce to pull stalks through the chopper.

You'll know if the balance gets off!!!
