Subject: Re: Soil test ?'s

How much nitrogen are you getting every year from the mineralization of the organic matter? That is the ten million dollar question. I can have the soil sampled to determine the amount of nitrogen already present in the soil and I know the nitrogen requirement per bushel of each crop. The hardest part in determining nitrogen recommendations is determining the amount of nitrogen I can get from the organic matter breakdown. I know that the percent of organic matter can vary across the field (it has been measured), but the weather (mainly moisture) will determine the breakdown rate of the organic matter. What is the best procedure to determine the nitrogen supplying capacity of the soil? My current method is supplying different rates of nitrogen in a field and looking at yields.
