Swift Current, Sask | Well, we'll be planting about the same time as you, most of the durum here in southern Saskatchewan will be going in between April 25-May 25. Our cereals (durum, wheat) go in after the pulse crops, so some will be early, and some later, depending on the farm. There are plans for bigger durum acres than last year, especially from what I've heard from local farmers.
Things don't look good for us, especially to the south of us, which is the heart of the durum growing area in Saskatchewan. Some areas look like they are headed for their fourth year of drought, and alot of areas are short on moisture. We have about 12" of sub-soil moisture, and we have been one of the "wet" areas, having had fall rains and a decent snow pack. Most didn't have any snow cover, and no rain. There have been areas that have been blowing off-and-on throughout the winter because they are so dry and the lack of residue from years of drought. Saw a pic the other day of a guy out in the field with his airdrill trying to pull up lumps so the soil would quit blowing.
All in all, things don't look to good right now, but one snow or good rain will have guys alot more optimistic. It's a long way from harvest, but we need ALOT of moisture to get even an average crop. Hope you guys can get a good crop. From what I've heard and read, you've had it alot rougher than we have. | |
