We use just woodchips year round. Doesn't burn em up in the winter but keeps it from stinkin. I wouldn't quit with just the smaller pigs. We put 250# pigs in and it does just fine. Biggest thing I would say is put concrete walls around it. That way you can have a couple bays to compost in and also a bay for material.
