Measure the rod that goes from the air chamber to the slack adjuster with the emergency air valve button pushed in and the tractor pressure up to at least 100 PSI.
Have some one push the brake pedal on the tractor and measure the travel on the rod, should be no more than 2" if I recall correctly.
This is how the DOT will check them if they do a level 1 inspection.
