Joe, any time you have 3-phase, you have 1-phase by only hooking to two of the hot legs, or one hot and the ground. You need to be concerned about what voltages the gen-set can make. For lots of single phase 208 or 120V power, you need an alternator that can be hooked to make 208V Wye 3-phase.
