If you feel your getting compaction because of their being no place for the dirt to move as the opener opens the slot it is possible you are using to much downpreasure on your row unit. A quick test of this is with the planter in planting conditions you should be able to walk up behind the row unit grab your gaugewheel and be able to turn it with light friction to the soil. In my several years of strip till it takes very little down preasure in strip till if you can maintain your planter in the strip, the problem becomes if you wonder of the strip the downpreasure I am talking about is probably not enough for a notill situation.
