I don't know exactly what the glitch is, but when talking to Stellar Support because we couldn't get the ATU dialed in with the new software but were able to do it on a similar tractor with the old software, they made us aware of the DTAC case. You are right that having the new software on the card will lead to prompts to update. Maybe take the software off?
