| Subject came up during some genealogy research. I received the following narrative: " In 1851, in that locality (Kane County, IL) most of the wheat sown was club wheat. Mr. Morse was the first to thresh (at that time threshing was done mostly with flails). Mr. Morse was the first to go to the mill taking club wheat. A few days later the family was taken seriously ill. Investigation determined the cause to be smut in the flour. Mr. Morse and two children died from the smut poison in the flour. The other members of the family--it was thought were saved by copious vomiting immediately eating. Result was all club wheat was burned in that vicinity that year." | |
