Shelbina, MO
You hit the nail on the head there! Welcome to our world! One my best friends has always said we are either 2 weeks away from a flood or a drought! I think the newer corn genetics have helped us alot in the last 5-8 years. My corn ran from 145-154 bu. and I was ready to expect 80 bu. in August. I'm just a hobby farmer working a job, but I get to be the next generation to farm our ground. All of my ground is on a nice prairie. Thin topsoil and a hell of'a hardpan. Their are some nice bottom fields around, they are closer to the water table but tend to be either sandy or crayfishy and can flood anytime. I'll never forget watching dad plowing under standing corn in either '80 or '81. (It adjusted at 0 bu. One dry-ass year!) I shelled all the corn in '88 and it ran between 5-10 bu. I guess I always remember those years when planning for the next crop!
