I did the NH3 in straw thing a couple of years when hay was short. Seems like I left it for a couple of weeks after uncovering before feeding it. I ground mine and mixed with other hay such as bromegrass and alfalfa and sudex. Worked fine, cows did great. The straw bales did tend to draw moisture where they sat on the ground and thus were tough grinding, really pulled down on the tub-grinder. My cows weren't too keen on the bales by theirself tho.
