Centre county Pennsylvania, USA | The number of GPS satellites visible (above 15 degrees elevation) in Midwest dropped to 4 for a brief period Sat afternoon (11/17/2007). During that period the visible GPS satellites were providing very poor quality GDOP. Here is a screen snap of DOP for Sioux City IA on Nov 17 2007, compliments of Trimble's planning software utility. I think it shows why Midwest folks were experiencing GPS guidance problems Saturday afternoon. GDOP values larger than about 3 are considered poor quality and cause significant GPS position errors.
