Subject: "Hi Tech" Soil Sampling in South Georgia (Pic)

Ashburn, GA, (very close to Heaven!)

Everybody seems to like pictures, so I thought I'd add mine.

Here is a picture of my view pulling soil samples from a good south Georgia peanut field using GPS, Site Mate, and a few custom add-on's to my ATV.

  • The step probe is necessary in most of our soils, as they can get a little crusty, not so in a peanut field, but a necessity in most cotton and corn fields.
  • I use a Dell Axim X5, used from eBay, and the PDA mount also came from eBay, with the actual cradle from GPS City.
  • The black box on the right holds a motorcycle battery for GPS power.  I used to have a little trouble running the GPS from the ATV battery.
  • I put three paint buckets up there to pull multiple samples at a time before having to bag, or crossing over grids.
  • The orange strap below the PDA mount is my Velcro strain relief.
  • The metal on the soil sample box in front of the buckets makes it easy to "beat out" a hard, crusted core into the bucket.

I'm also planning to put this at Crop Talk since there is more traffic over there.
