Because you're moving the material out of the rotor faster than the corn can fall away.

Here's how I have my 1660 set up right now. Every other wire out of the third concave. Concave setting varies depending on hybrid. Rotor speed anywhere from 250-400. Sometimes I have to adjust it throughout the day even in the same hybrid. I assume it has something to do with plant moisture. I run full stick 2nd gear (about 5 mph) in up to 200+ bu corn with a 6 row 30" head. Open up the bottom sieve and run the fan fast. I run mine at 1100 rpm. Run the top sieve open enough to get a little cob in the sample. The cob is worth as much as the corn. Different hybrids act completely differently. Just make one adjustment at a time, so that you can see whether or not its working.
