You hit the protruding nail on the head. With silage, it is 100% biomass removal and in many areas, that removal happens year after year – continuous silage. If you pull organic matter samples on the continuous silage fields, you’ll find that the OM is higher than on comparable fields harvested just for grain. Continuous silage fields are typically used for manure disposal and are frequently no-tilled or minimally tilled because there is no residue to worry about. It looks like tillage is the most important issue because half of the non-grain biomass in a cornfield is below ground and will never be harvested.
