Subject: Re: NutriDense Corn

northeastern Ohio

I tried two Nutridense hybrids about 7 years ago. If memory serves me correctly, one was a high protein hybrid (high moisture corn tested 12% protein) and the other was a "high digestability" hybrid (low lignin). Both hybrids performed as advertised, but agronomics were terrible. Lodging was very noticeable by the time they were ready for silage harvest and there is no way they could have stood until grain harvest. The low lignin hybrid did have a very good silage yield (tonnage) but was lower in starch than my regular silage hybrid which yielded slightly more.  The high protein hybrid did not have a very good grain yield (below average).

They were only in my test plot one year. I concluded that they would not fit my operation due to the fact that I considered them "silage only" hybrids. I prefer to use dual purpose hybrids. They might work in your situation as long as you know the characteristics that you are getting and they fit your operation.
