Without a corn tassel there will be no pollen dropping onto and impregnating the silks. Without fertilized silks there will be no kernals when the cob develops. Detasseling is only done on seed corn. To produce hybrid seed corn the growers plant two varieties in separate rows. One variety will be allowed to tassel and produce pollen that will impregnate the silks of the other variety. The second variety will have its tassels cutoff prior to pollination to make sure that only the preferred pollenator is available when the silks emerge. Only the detasseled corn is harvested for seed, the other variety used to be harvested separately, but many growers just destroy it after pollination is complete. Unless you're growing seed corn there is no need to detassel corn.
