Sounds similar to some of the twin row tests we did. On heavy ground that is not well drained, it certainly seems to help. On our better drained silt loams didn't seem to make much difference.
I think some varieties respond better to twin rows as well. I'm a big fan of 5634's as well, but they seem to do better drilled or narrow row than in wide single rows, at least on my farm. Did they lap the middles on the wide singles?
