Little River, TX | Did a little gathering cotton, but we snapped the cotton here, lot easier than picking.
Fall 1973 our oldest girl was on a potatoes harvesting crew for hand picking potatoes near Caribou, Maine. She just thought she was in good shape. And came home covered with dirt. They were picked up around 5 am the first week when their was very little overnight frost in the ground. Had to wait for the frost to be gone before they plowed the potatoes out of the ground.
They used a gasket to gather the spuds and they dumped the spuds into their barrel. They got paid by the barrel.
School stared late July early August, and let out for the harvest. School did not start up again till all the potatoes in the district had been gathered.
All I can say about that area is great people but lousy climate.
