| I had some johnson grass in some land that was sowed to CRP, after 3-4 years it has been smothered out or is dormant in 6-8 ft tall Buffalo grass. If you have a good bush hog for you will need one, I would burn it off with roundup, do a late seeding in November thru Feburary of buffalo grass , switch grass ect and hope it comes up next summer. If the j g comes faster, clip it, if it gets higher than the native grasses, wick it. Once the grasses get established, after 2-3 years, it will crowd out the J-G. I see a spear of J G here and there, but nothing like I had. The deer love the tall brown grass, you can't see them in there, but they can see you. There are some chemicals out there that you can spray that will retard the j g and not kill the native grass. The soil and water conservation boys could give you some good ideas and maybe some assistance on the establish of native grasses, especially if the field has erosion problems. Bob Ohio | |
