Central Kansas | There should be a 'curl' on either side of the stem that the melon is attached to.....that are dried up or drying up. Also...most green melons will get a creamy color on the belly side instead of white. The overall appearance of a ripe melon changes from a 'shiny' look to overall dull appearance. Take all these indicators plus the thump test....then cut the melon open. If it is ripe and sweet...you are a genius.....if green or over-ripe hairy on the inside you had better try some other indicators. The dried up curls either side of the melon attachment point seems to work best for me along with the yellowing of the bottom of the melon. In this area, faves are crimson sweet, black diamond, and Texas grays. | |
