On a datalogger system, you have to hardwire the serial GPS connection to the datalogger connector. Pin 3 on the 8-pin datalogger connector is RS232 receive. Run the receiver Tx wire into pin 3. Splice into pin 8 for data ground.
and yes, you must have a datacard inserted in the datalogger to record data
