I had a fence that I was SURE was turned off but in fact was being backfed through a slinky gate I had forgot about. That really knocked me on my backside. Like one of those heart restarters being applied suddenly.
Ever since then I try to carry the Gallagher tester with me or in a pinch use my neighbors method of taking a blade of grass and rubbing it on the fence wire. You will feel a tingle thru the grass if its hot but at least you are not thrown on your backside.
I suggest folks be careful about the size of charger they buy. You want one big enough to do the job but not so big it can injure a person (like me) who happens to touch a hot wire now and then. I find 6 joule (Model 600) is about that point in my situation/conditions.
