Oklahoma | My guess is your talking about threeawn. Has little seeds that are 1/2 inch to 1 inch long and bent that get stuck in socks, boots, etc????
I have always been told that threeawn is a indicator of low P but I have hear folks at OSU and the Noble Foundation say they can't prove it. I know my pastures this year with the drought, I have had it come up worse than normal. As for control, the best I have found is lots of chicken litter. Had a rancher also tell me that he was getting rid of it by doing a fall prescribed burn which burned the seeds while they were on the plant. Once they fall off the plant it is too late. There are a couple diffent types of threeawn one is an annual and then I think there is a perenial also but they do have some allelopathic effects, thus the burning is why the rancher was using that.
Range prof in college told us that the only thing that some plants are good for is covering the soil and threeawn is one of those. | |
