Personally, I would go >12' wide, and drive on the pad. You WILL have feed pushed off the edge, and create a mucky mess where you want to drive. Will it in crease your costs? Most definately. Will it be worth it? Most definately. Unless this is a little use, temporary feeding station, you will really regret only going 3' wide.

If the near future sees a trough of some sort, then it ccould probably be dealt with for a short period of time.

As far as a footing, probably a slightly deeper around the outside would be fine. Make sure your gravel meets the top edge of the pad, and you should be OK.


Also, Make sure the finish is very smooth, the girls like it much better than a rough surface on thier tongue.
