I would think it would work. I was just making an old "range maget" joke.

Our horse always lived on moldy alfalfa/bermuda that couldn't be sold, corn stalk bales/wheat straw bales, and pigweed. Until one day someone stopped by and wanted to buy him. Man that was a good day.
I would for sure get a nitrate test. I don't know the levels that horses can take but Non ruminents will be even less tolerant than cows.
