I did exactly what you are planning on doing last fall on 9/2 (flown into standing corn) I used 3# tillage radishes and I think about a bushel of rye grain/ac. Due to the very dry fall nothing germinated until about the first of Oct. The radishes got about 4" tall before they winter killed. The Rye though, really got going last fall even with a late start. It helped supplement the stalks for the cows last fall for about a month and I got about 60 days grazing out of it this spring before going into beans. As you stated, timely rains will be important to get things started, but even with a dry fall last year, I was pretty happy with the rye. Nothing ventured, nothing gained! Good Luck!
