Iowa | Any time I've heard of guys having problems with calves/cattle and alfalfa, it was more about bloat, and generally bloat associated with over eating and the leaves forming small particles in bloat prone animals. I haven't actually seen it in my cattle though. So 1st cutting would be the best cutting to feed cattle since it should be your most coarse. I sell alfalfa and feed it to my own cattle and the best alfalfa to feed to my cattle is the cutting that had the highest amount of bloom and the lowest quality without mold. It usually has more than enough energy in it to keep the weight on cattle, even up here where we have minus double digits for much of the winter. | |
