Here's a picture from my soil testing last October from an earlier discussion on where to soil test in a strip till system. I also do soil hardness checks with a probe. The obvious place to do this is between the existing corn rows which is exactly where next years corn will be. I do not soil sample exactly in the middle of an old root ball but take several samples across the wiidth and mix them. Here's a picture of the corn from last fall before grazing also. I didn't put steers in this corn until after Christmas. Jim at Dawn edit: as I am less than a month from taking the steers grazing this corn to the processors, I will try to get a picture of this area of the field and maybe the steers today. They are really grazing it down since the weather warmed up a bit and the steers themselves look like they are really putting on the pounds. In past years I have left too much corn standing. This year it is about right.
