NE Kansas | Hey guys, just so you know, no amount of steel or fiber will prevent cracks. Reinforcing will prevent differential movement at a crack which is what causes problems and can be a big problem if you're pouring on compacted fill and the fill wasn't compacted properly or contains too much organic matter. The best thing you can do for a floor slab is make sure you have proper compaction of the soil under it and isolate it in some fashion from the soil, using gravel or sand. This will allow the slab to move independently of the soil, which is particularly important when working with expansive clay soil. When a slab or wall does crack, the reinforcing helps prevent the concrete from moving and shifting since it's no longer a monolithic structure.
Concrete will crack no matter what you do (and don't feel bad about it when it does), that's a sure thing, controlling the cracks is the important part.
