for different folks. Now using 4 barb and 1 smooth for hot wire. I place the smooth wire 2nd from bottom. It really does nothing to deter the cows but works wonders on the feral hogs.  Lost about 25% of my wheat crop 2 years ago and haven't had any hogs since I put the hot wire up in Nov 09.
