I'll bet you tangled with Wasabi which is what the Japanese use as or in mustard sauce. Wasabi like horseradish and it is some kind of hot. It just plain hurts.
I remember a tipsy Navy guy putting on a bunch of "mustard" on his hot dog in Japan one time and he just about choked when he took a bite.
