A mistaken cow purchase is one bad calf. A bull is half of ALL of your calves and a mistake affects all of your calves and can persist for several generations. Choose carefully.

I think it pays to establish a relationship with a more or less local breeder raising bulls that will do well in your location and system. Then be his best repeat customer. He knows his bulls better than you ever will. jmho.
