The jacks job is make sure the babies can survive.
The donkey to survive needs to be on it's feet.
Calves and lambs are bred to lay stall, as a survival tactic.
The jack tries to get them youngsters on their feet with disastrous results.

Friend who explained this to me drifted into buying and selling donkeys. He tells me for herd protection put a single dry Jenny in with your animals. Never put two or is a mama. Never ever think of a jack as a guard animal. Not even a gilded jack.

What do I know I just sell him hay to feed the critters.
